About Libya

Libya is officially known as the Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya. It is located in North Africa bordering the Mediterranean Sea to the North, lying between Egypt to the East, Sudan to the South East, Chad and Niger to the South, and Algeria and Tunisia to the West.

Libya has an area of almost 1,800,000 square kilometers (694,984 sq mi), 90% of which is desert; Libya is the fourth largest country in Africa by area, and the 17th largest in the world

Libya's capital has a population of 1.7 million of the total population of 5.7 million people. The three traditional regions of the country are Tripolitania, Fezzan, and Cyrenaica.

The country lies at the crossroads of time, history and long forgotten ancient empires. It is the hub of the Mediterranean's most plentiful Roman and Greek cities including: Sabratha, Cyrene and Leptis Magna. Tripoli is a cosmopolitan city whilst walking through its ever changing streets, different layers of history appears. Libya is the nest of Africa's most remarkable desert scenery, which include the oasis towns of Ghadames and Ghat.
